Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
June 8 A..D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
2 Corinthians 1:1-7
Psalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Blessed are the Pure of Heart. . . .
Our translation today says, "Blessed are the clean of heart;" however, nearly every other reliable translation in the history of Bible translation has used "pure of heart." And that is my preferred, non-expert translation -- not because "clean" is wrong, but because pure has a dual meaning that is important to us today.
Pure means clean; however, it doesn't mean only clean. Pure also means without distraction, focused, single-minded. Blessed are the pure in heart because their one end, their one meaning, their one purpose, their one thought is for God and His will.
Simply, Jesus tells us that if it is our one hope, thought, desire to see God, then it shall be so. If we dedicate our lives to seeing Him, He will show Himself to us -- perhaps even here on Earth if we are looking hard enough. Purity of heart then is a great gift because it carries with it the promise of vision, of seeing and being with God.
