Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 18:23-28
Psalm 47:2-3, 8-9, 10
John 16:23b-28

A reflection on today's Scripture:

For the Father loves you because you have loved me . . . [and] believe . . . I came from God. (see John 16:27)

Love is the unifying power of God's three Persons; it is that which makes them One.

Love is also that which unites us to God and enables us to make Him seen and known in us whom He created to be His children. The beginning of Chapter 15 shows the intimacy between us and Christ when He tells His disciples that He is the vine, which gives life to them, all His branches, and enables them to produce fruit to spiritually feed the world.

Also preceding today's Gospel, Jesus promises to send them His "Spirit of Truth" Who will remind them of all that they had seen and heard that identified Him as the Messiah. Again Christ warns that they will be persecuted, will scatter to leave Him alone, but His Father will always be with Him.

This chapter ends on a positive note when Christ tells His disciples that though the world may cause them much pain, they must not grieve, for He has conquered the world. This means that He has defeated its evil by coming to us in our human flesh as the personification of God's perfect holiness, His love and truth. Then in the power of His Spirit, His disciples can keep Him present in the world by teaching and living in those values that are inherent in God's love.

Human freedom can only be achieved by our being released from slavery to sin. The truth of this statement becomes evident if we take time to examine the cause of all this world's woes and our perverse behavior.

O Heavenly Father, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for He has been raised to be the Lord of life. May we who share in His risen life lead others to follow Him. Amen.
