Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

May 18 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 16:11-15
Psalm 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a and 9b
John 15:26-16:4a

A reflection on today's Scripture:

You also will testify. . . . (see John 15:26-27
With the gift of the Holy Spirit, God has given us everything that is needed. Everything that is needed for our happiness, everything that is needed for our salvation, everything that is needed for the salvation of the world (accomplished by the sacrificial Death and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ).

Too often we forget that.

Sometimes in our confusion we think that we are somehow responsible for our own salvation. Sometimes we think that everything depends on our words. In both cases we are wrong. Everything that is necessary is already in place. When God wants us to speak, He will give us words -- or more importantly, actions (remember the admonition to "Preach always; when necessary use words.")

The truth is that almost nothing depends solely on ourselves. Indeed, by ourselves we can't accomplish anything. Our job is to align our wills with God's will and then all that is necessary will be. We need worry for nothing. If we make the smallest gesture of cooperation, God will move in and do all that is required. And, praise be to Him, He will also help us in making that smallest gesture.

Such is the gift of the Holy Spirit.
