Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 57:8-9, 10 and 12
A reflection on today's Scripture:
We might think of such criteria as common interests, the ability to communicate comfortably with each other, an openness toward one another, the ability to overlook or at least forgive one another's weaknesses or faults, a degree of love and understanding, and the list can go on. Another person might come up with other characteristics because we are all unique.
In the gospel for today we learn that Christ has chosen us to be His friends. It is hard for us to fathom that the Creator of the universe and of all mankind has chosen us to be His friends; "You are my friends if you do what I command you." (John 15:14) That requirement might sound a bit harsh, but it has to do with reality.
Christ asks that we choose what is good, not evil. As total goodness, He cannot align Himself with that which is other than His own nature. He came to redeem us and forgives us when we turn to Him in sorrow and in The Sacrament for our offenses.
Returning again to the topic of friendship, what characteristics do you look for in establishing a friendship, and how are you doing in being a good friend of Jesus?
He has chosen you to be His friend.
