Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

May 12 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 14:19-28
Psalm 145:10-11, 12-13ab, 21
John 14:27-31a

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. (John 14:27)

How true! The peace of Jesus is completely different from the peace offered by the world. Worldly peace is portrayed as an absence of conflict and division. The peace Jesus gives springs forth from His word which divides marrow from bone. The peace of Jesus pierces the heart and often causes restlessness within the soul. The peace of Jesus propels us often toward conflict, not away from it! God's peace-filled people today are often called to be bold warriors!

Unlike an imaginary escape from the stresses of life, the peace which Jesus gives draws us to the wounded, the marginalized, where we, like the Master, seek to wash the feet of God's precious ones. Such care for the poor of society inevitably brings on suspicion, accusation, and anger. Ask, with real interest, any missioner who works with the poorest in our society and you will hear how much opposition God's peacemakers encounter when seeking to give God's peace to the lost ones in our village earth.

The peace which Jesus gives, while it seems to encounter conflict and opposition, also refreshes the soul because that peace brings us into the same unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. That unity, that abiding love far outweighs the human stresses which arise from obedient sacrificial love poured out for the sake of God's little ones. The peace of Jesus can lead us to some long days and nights, yet deep and peaceful sleep. The peace of Jesus can lead to aching muscles and tired backs, yet feeling at home in one's body. The peace of Jesus can radically widen our sense of purpose on this earth yet renew us in a sure confidence of our citizenship in heaven.
