Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
May 9 A..D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4
A reflection on today's Scripture:
"I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth."
The quotation above applies to Paul and his visitation by the risen Christ which changed him from a person who knew "about" Christ to a man who actually came to "know" Him. The first applies to "hearsay" while the second requires seeing into Christ's very heart. The latter comes to those who are genuinely seeking God for Himself and not for some self-gratifying reason.
When God confronts people like Paul who sincerely pray, He gives them insights into themselves, their words, actions or attitudes that conflict with His love and truth. All of us can come to know Him in this intimate way that leads to holiness, God's goal for all humanity.
Applying today's Scripture to ourselves, we will go through a time fraught with doubts and questions, but if we persist in prayer, Christ continues to reveal Himself. We do not see His image nor hear a voice, but we begin to see into His heart by how He deals with our sins, our personal problems and our difficulties with others. Slowly we will become rapt by His purity and goodness, His truth and love, which are the very essence of God's Being and the motive force of His Life.
Paul's encounter with the risen Christ caused Him to lose his sight because his perceptions were distorted and in need of healing. Such is the work that Christ desires to do in each of us, giving us a dark time to consider His importance in our lives and in the lives of others whom we touch.
In Christ, we truly can live a new life, one of love and truth that can heal broken relationships and bring wholeness to a sick world. This is what can truly take place if we allow Him to make us "instruments of salvation."
O merciful Father,
enable us to bring Christ's divine life into this world, that all may see the inheritance You have promised and the means to participate in Your glorious life.
