Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
April 27 A..D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Do not work for food that perishes. . . . (John 6:27)
Too often we have our attention focused in the wrong place -- often a very good place, but often the wrong place.
We're tantalized by the latest Marian apparition. We're intrigued by this Bishop or that Saint. Sometimes the places are not so good and holy -- sometimes we are transfixed by the next episode of Survivor or Lost or any number of other shows. Sometimes we're concerned about the latest fashions, the newest cameras and computers, the most recent headline. Sometimes we're lost in the world of home improvement or cooking.
All of these can be very good things indeed, but not if they distract us from the One Thing Necessary. As Jesus told Martha when she complained about Mary not helping -- Mary had the One Thing Necessary, to sit at the feet of the Lord and learn from His instruction.
Jesus tells us here, food is a good thing indeed. Life does not continue without food; however, if all of our attention, will, and focus are placed on getting food and more food, two things will happen. First, we'll never have enough food -- there is not enough food in the entire universe to fill the God-shaped void that we are seeking to fill. Second, we will not be able to know God in a way that will stop the longing.
We need to change our focus and all of the good things will have their proper places in our lives. When God is at the center, everything else falls into proportion around Him -- the void is filled, and we become people of joy. We leave our cravings behind and go to The One who is repleteness itself.
