Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

April 23 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 5:27-33
Psalms 34:2 and 9, 17-18, 19-20
John 3:31-36

A reflection on today's Scripture:

It is no secret that the sentiment of joy is associated with the Resurrection of Christ and the celebrations of the Easter season.

Joy is an expression of happiness. The joy of this season is the fruit of faith in God and the witness to God's creative deeds and saving acts that we have come to know. (See the Catechism of the Catholic Church #163 for connection of faith and joy. The index gives additional citations.)

Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit and the follower of Christ should cultivate it, as did the Apostles and disciples. The readings from the Acts of the Apostles, such as today's, communicate the joy of the Apostles. In various ways they have answered their accusers or preached to the crowds with enthusiasm -- "This is what we have witnessed, what we have received and what we must teach!" It is helpful to our spirituality to pray with the dominant attitudes and experiences of the Church associated with its different liturgical seasons. Joy will deepen an appreciation of what has been given to the disciple now and what is yet to be given.

Today I should receive Jesus' word with joy: "The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to Him. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him." Peter and the Apostles explained what God had done in and through Jesus and the gift that is the Holy Spirit, for the forgiveness of sin. Belief, repentance, forgiveness and new life avoid the wrath and are a reason for joy.

Joy is found in believing the gospel teaching of Jesus and joy is communicated by sharing the Word of God as did Peter and the Apostles.
