Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

April 18 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 4:13-21
Psalm 118:1 and 14-15ab, 16-18, 19-21
Mark 16:9-15

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15)

In today's gospel the risen Christ rebukes His Apostles for stubbornly disbelieving those who had actually seen and spoken with Him following His death.

Some of these followers had spent nearly three years hearing Jesus proclaim the "Good News," the forgiveness of sin, the salvation of all humanity and the promise of a new life both here and in eternity for those who believed in and obeyed God's Word. Still they insisted on withholding their belief until they saw Him with their own eyes.
Such an attitude was contrary to having faith in God's truth and love as had consistently been revealed by Christ. Indeed, to this day Jesus calls us to suspend our disbelief and participate through grace in His new and blessed, sinless life that can result in this world living in God's love, truth and, at long last, true sanity.

Today's portion from the Acts of the Apostles reveals Peter and John imbued with Christ's Holy Spirit, continuing His mission of preaching forgiveness to the sinful and healing to the infirm.

The religious leaders feared them for they performed remarkable deeds in Christ's name exampled by the healing of the cripple now standing before them. They had no notion of how to stop the Apostles except to warn them to cease speaking of Jesus, especially since the people were all praising God for the good that Christ was continuing to do through His Apostles.

These simple fishermen had been transformed into fearless missionaries to bring God's love and His spiritual healing to all. We too can reveal Christ's saving Word to the world by our actually living in it.

O Blessed Lord, teach us that grand words cannot touch human hearts as deeply as the smallest act done in sincere love. Amen.
