Psalm 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Do not be afraid. . . . (Matthew 28:10)
The world is so full of things to be frightened of -- the violence against the innocent, the greed of large companies and already wealthy individuals, the betrayal of those close to us. We could spend our entire lives so trapped by fear that we would do nothing whatsoever.
But Jesus tells us, "Do not be afraid." And when He says this, He means that we should not fear anything. And this makes sense because He has shown us salvation, triumph over death. All who have faith and believe in Him are part of His family and are going with Him into eternity.
Therefore, it is good to not be afraid. And we should spread this lack of fear by preaching the Gospel through our actions and words. We don't need to preach as a priest does; we need to preach so as to translate the truths that the Holy Mother Church passes onto us to those who are as yet unaware of them.
Each day, each year, so many fall away from the faith, and there are so many who have not heard the good news. These people have much to be afraid of, and through them, much of the fear comes into the world.
So, as we live our lives of faith and trust, we need to reach out to those who have not yet seen and known Jesus. We need to remind those who once knew Him, Whom it is they once knew. We can do this through small acts of kindness, through offering prayers, and through boldly living our faith. The truth is very attractive all by itself; we need add nothing whatsoever to it except living it to the full.
Do not be afraid; God will be with you as you live out the faith, and you too will become one of the "fishers of men."
