Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

March 26 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Exodus 32:7-14
Psalm 106:19-20, 21-22, 23
John 5:31-47

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Sometimes people get locked into a way of thinking and when something new or different is encountered, it is difficult to accept.

Jesus spoke to those who had cultivated a mix of beliefs. On the one hand, they believed that God provided through the Mosaic Law a way of salvation and on the other hand, that it was necessary for the Messiah to come to set the people free. About this Jesus says, "You search the Scriptures, because you think you have eternal life through them; even they testify on my behalf. But you do not want to come to me to have life." (John 5:39-40)

Believing in Jesus Christ may lead someone to wonder, "What does this have to do with me?" Hard sayings, like the ones in this passage, often have to do with shaking the believer loose from one's own perspective about a relationship with Jesus to work on developing a richer or even changed relationship with Jesus.

Resistance to the Holy Spirit's promptings to reconsider elements of one's faith life and God's will may be one's way of "not wanting to come to Him to have new life." For instance, think of testimony from a member of a faith-sharing group who indicates that years of avoiding groups left many questions unanswered, gave rise to situations where it seemed God had forgotten the person, or a loneliness went unfulfilled while Jesus was already offering this "new life" in and through His Body, the Church.

Readers of scripture may become experts, inclined to analysis, information, and various insights, but not inclined to hearing the voice of the Lord.

Active workers in the vineyard, at the food pantry, at the church liturgical functions or religious education may get caught short by Jesus asking for personal time!

Like Martha and Mary, we can all use some time searching beyond our ways in order to answer the invitation as it is given this Passiontide, "Come to Me!"
