Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

March 19 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

2 Samuel 7:4-5a, 12-14a, 16
Psalm 89:2-3, 4-5, 27 and 29
Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22
Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24a

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today is the Feast of Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

We know very little about Joseph, but it seems from the moment he entered the gospel story he was on the move with his virgin bride and her son. What a trial this must have been for him to be chased away from his work and the land he called home. Even though we know little about Joseph he serves as an excellent example for us.

Joseph seemed to always be on the run with Mary and Jesus and today Jesus is on the run again, being chased away from schools, the workplace and public events of all kinds. Additionally, the secular world and our society try to chase Jesus away from us at every turn. We are constantly tempted and offered a "better way," be it consumerism, new-age religions and such.

As Joseph shows us in the gospel, it is never wrong to do the right thing. No matter how awkward the situation might be, we are required to follow the Lord's commands. No matter how inconvenient, trying, expensive, exhausting and unaccepted by society, we are required to obey. We must carry the Lord with us throughout our secular world even when it is much simpler to stay put and do nothing, or when it is easier to choose a different road that seems easier less difficult.

Although the scripture is not detailed, it tells us enough to know about good people like Joseph who shows us the way -- the right way -- to react when faced with seemingly impossible situations.
