Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
March 6 A.D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be children of your heavenly Father. . . . (Matthew 5:44-45)
God is pure and perfect love; therefore He is an ever-creative and totally self-giving Being who abides in the absolute truth inherent in His love.
Love and truth can't be separated, because loving requires God, its very source, to do what is best for the receivers of His love. The original receivers, Adam and Eve, should have obeyed their Creator, certain that He had already provided perfectly for them and that the one thing denied them He withheld for their good.
Sin enters when man uses his free will to contradict the perfection of the love that created him to share in His blessed life. The "Evil One" awakens pride by tempting us to exercise our will to enhance our pleasure, self-importance and independence.
If we examine the source of man's conflicts, we see that they all originate from our wish to enthrone "self" over God and our fellow humans. This renders us incapable of telling good from evil and makes us expert in rationalizing perverse behavior to appear that it was done to improve over the "good."
Matthew's chapter 5 should be considered in its entirety for it defines righteousness as God in Christ has revealed it to us. The Beatitudes describe moral perfection; then Jesus continues by naming a series of destructive behaviors such as violence, revenge, faithlessness and lawlessness. In today's gospel, He overturns the hostility often expressed toward sinners in the Old Testament and replaces it with His joyful message of repentance, forgiveness, salvation, peace and eternal life.
O Heavenly Father of light,
open our hearts to the voice of Your Word to banish the darkness from our hearts and replace it with the fullness of Your life and limitless truth.
