Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

March 5 A.D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Esther C:12, 14-16, 23-25 (or 4:17, Esther's prayer)
Psalm 138:1-2ab, 2cde-3, 7c-8
Matthew 7:7-12

A reflection on today's Scripture:

There are two very important lessons from today's gospel.

The first can be realized by looking closely at the Lord's commands to the apostles to take nothing with them as they were sent out. "Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money." They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. The lesson here is really not that complex: Jesus was teaching the disciples to have complete dependence on God in their journey. Anything taken with them could have (and most certainly would have) been a distraction, taking them away from the task at hand, which was preaching.

The second lesson is a bit more subtle in that it seems to be overshadowed by the first. That lesson is that God shared with the apostles much of His power. With this power, they drove out demons and healed the sick.

The same lessons apply to us today. Do we rely solely on God for all we need, or do we tend to rely more on the things of the world? Do we realize that we share in the great gifts God has given us, or do we sit on them and leave them unused and stagnate?
