Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Februrary 26 A.D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Deuteronomy 30:15-20
Psalm 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6
Luke 9:22-25

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Any number of cartoons and monologues by comedians and talks by motivational speakers answer the question: "What is the secret to life?" It is appropriate that God took it upon Himself to do so through the prophet Moses. Here are the three (what? rules? laws? commandments?): Love the Lord, heed His voice, and hold fast to Him. This is how to choose life! A long life, an eternal life, in the land of the living!

By prayer I express a love for the Lord. By fasting I live not by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. By alms, I hold fast to the Lord, giving as God gives, mercifully, for the sake of others.

Jesus' description of the path of discipleship tests my resolve. The fidelity Jesus calls for is not just self-denial. It is the cross as it is given to me and it is daily. Lenten prayer and penance are a discipline, the discipline of discipleship. The secret to life has been revealed by the One who is the fullness of life. Jesus calls us, teaches us and shows us where to go..
