Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Februrary 25 A.D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Joel 2:12-18
Psalm 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 12-13, 14 and 17
2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2
Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Here we go again! It's Lent!

What are we going to do, be gloomy because it is a time for penance? Or worse, perhaps, ignore altogether that it is a time to acknowledge our sinfulness and meditate on Jesus' sacrificial death? We could instead develop the attitude that a season for penance offers us an opportunity and a time for gratitude.

While opportunity and gratitude are pleasant sounding words, penance implies something quite different, maybe even difficult. How then, can we resolve what seems so dissonant?

If we recognize that Lent offers us a chance to participate in Christ's saving act for our salvation and the redemption of the whole world, we could rightly say this is a season of opportunity and gratitude. Penance then, is seen not as something just symbolic, but a real opportunity for salvation.

Think of it, if your acts of penance in union with Christ, could save you, someone you love, rescue the world from darkness, or change someone's heart, wouldn't you be glad to do it? Wouldn't you think of it as a tremendous opportunity? Wouldn't you be grateful to be able to have it?

Let us then try and assume this attitude as we enter this holy season of penance, a season of opportunity and gratitude.

Change our hearts this time, your word says it can be.
Change our minds this time, your life could make us free.
We are the people your call sets apart.
Lord, this time change our hearts.
