Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
Februrary 23 A.D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 93:1ab, 1cd-2, 5
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Everything is possible to one who has faith. . . .
Everything is possible. Dorothy Day and Mother Teresa spent their lives serving the poorest of the poor and always relying upon God to provide them the money and the things they needed in order to fulfill that Mission. The saint of the day, St. Polycarp, was able to endure the pains of martyrdom and triumph over his oppressors, perhaps even blessing them with the gift of faith as he died for Christ, because of his faith.
Faith is the key. When we cannot do what we know to be right and what lies within our power to do, it is because our faith is weak and we are frightened. When we turn with eyes of faith to God, He will strengthen our arm and He will carry us along to do all that is needed.
When Jesus says everything is possible, He does mean everything; however, not everything is proper to faith. He showed us this when He was tempted and asked to turn stones into bread. He surely could do it; it was within His power to make it happen; however, the gift of faith is not for parlor tricks and magic shows. It isn't something to be wasted on selfish trifles.
Rather, the gift of faith is given that we might also receive the gift of salvation, and more important, pass that gift on to others. So with the gift of faith, relying on that strength and love, we can be assured that all that is set out for us to do can be accomplished. We will triumph over every obstacle and win over every opponent if our gift of faith is used in service of God's will. We can become the workers of miracles if what we desire in the end is not the miracle, but God's will.
