Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
Februrary 7 A.D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Hebrews 13:15-17, 20-21
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Christ's heart was moved with pity, for they were like sheep without a shepherd, and He began to teach them. (see Mark 6:34)
Psalm 23 illustrates perfectly the theme of today's readings by describing our Creator's boundless love, His outpouring of care for every aspect of our needs -- physical, emotional and spiritual -- that leads us to fulfilling our humanity. In doing so, God is also setting an example for the parent-child relationship, for genuine love requires the giving and receiving of proper discipline that eliminates from both the parent and child all selfishness, self-centeredness and mindless self-will. The result of this relationship should be a mutual self-giving love, a full sharing of and living in those blessed truths we've received from God. Such is His plan for the world's salvation and peace; it must begin within and be spread abroad by each individual's heart.
The perennial human problem is sin, behavior that ignores the needs and rights of others and favors only self. Our reading from Hebrews suggests that the heart of any community should be motivated by the resurrection of Jesus, Who put our sin to death in His human flesh but was also reborn to share a new life with us, a sinless life we must maintain through a sacrificial living in obedience to Christ's self-giving love. Christ's love is enacted for us in today's gospel by His first drawing to Himself vast crowds, hungry to hear and see the Word of God in action. Second, it drives home the point that our sharing the good news of God's salvation plan should take precedence over our own immediate needs.
O Heavenly Father,
may we serve You by showing our love for one another as you have shown Your own sacrificial love for us through Christ.
