Psalm 22:26b-27, 28 and 30, 31-32
A reflection on today's Scripture:
It's all about faith!
In St. Paul's letter to the Hebrews, we are called to rid ourselves of sin and to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, our leader and "perfecter of faith." (see Hebrews 12:1-2)
In today's gospel, we see how key faith is, through the example of a woman who was healed from hemorrhages, simply by secretly touching Jesus' cloak while He was on the way to heal a twelve-year-old girl who was deathly ill. The disciples reacted in disbelief when Jesus asked who had just touched Him. He used their astonishment to draw attention to the great faith of the woman who had just been healed. The crowd knew her sickness, and instantly they knew that a remarkable miracle had just taken place. Jesus calmly said, "Daughter, your faith has saved you." (Mark 5:34) That was how powerful an action of faith is, when paired with accordance to the will of God.
The Gospel today also recounts how Jesus raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead. Even Jesus' reaction to the announcement of the little girl's death showed how important faith is. "Do not be afraid; just have faith." (Mark 5:36) Jairus did not send Jesus away saying that there was no more to do. Instead, just as the woman with hemorrhage had faith, so Jairus had faith in Jesus and his daughter was cured and came back from the dead.
Would that we might have greater faith and that some day, Jesus might say to us, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction."
