Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
January 31 A.D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Hebrews 11: 1-2, 8-19
Luke 1: 69-75
Mark 4: 35-41
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith? (Mark 4:40)
Faith is God's gift to those who truly recognize that our human existence, indeed all of creation, has a dimension that can't be fully described nor accounted for by what we perceive through our physical senses.
The human mind is ever seeking to transcend our need for food, clothing and shelter; we hunger for relationships, for of ourselves we feel incomplete and seek satisfaction by our associating with others. Sadly, because of our tendency to sin, we experience disappointments when we realize that we cannot totally satisfy another's needs nor can they fully satisfy ours.
Fortunately, logic finally suggests to many that our yearning originates from and can be fulfilled by another source, by the One perfect God Who designed and constructed such a complex and gifted creature as man and Who breathed a temporal life within us but gave us intimations of an eternal life as well. The prideful reject the notion of an intelligence greater than their own or a better way of life beyond satisfying their own temporal desires.
Our reading from Hebrews identifies a man whose heart is totally open to God, specifically Abraham, who became the patriarch of an entire nation, Israel, the people whom God chose to make Him known to the entire world.
Abraham's faith transcended his wish to raise a son by agreeing to sacrifice his child's life to fulfill God's will. His unquestioned trust in God saved his son's life. Such is the faith that Christ calls His followers to have in Him, a faith that never gives in to fear, even to that of death.
O Heavenly Father,
make us to share in the sonship of Christ by placing ourselves totally in Your hands by living in His same loving trust and obedience to Your will.
