Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Hebrews 10:11-18
Psalm 110:1, 2, 3, 4
Mark 4:1-20

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Sometimes I don't understand Holy Scripture at all, and though it might sound horrid admitting it, sometimes I'm in no state of mind, body or spirit to try and figure it out. Instead, I'll move along to a line or two that I can understand. Today is such a day.

Holy Scripture says, "But to those outside everything comes in parables, so that they may look and see but not perceive, and hear and listen but not understand, in order that they may not be converted and be forgiven." (see Mark 4:11-12)

What does this mean? Doesn't Jesus want everyone to understand and be forgiven?

Of course He does!

Someday, (I promise), I will gather some commentaries and try to find out what Jesus is saying. Today however, I will meditate on the scene in Holy Scripture, and not the words, moving from what I don't understand, toward what I do.

We hear that Jesus is in a boat with people gathered nearby. Some are on the shore. Some perhaps are in nearby boats, maybe even tethered to His. They are listening to Him preach. I wonder, momentarily, why doesn't He just sit on the shore with them? Instead, He uses the boat as a little stage.

So what's the point? For me, it is to read Holy Scripture openly and lovingly so that the Holy Spirit can lead where knowledge and wisdom might be found, or as in today's case, to a place of peace and tranquility.

God knows our moods and the limitations they sometimes impose. He doesn't intend that determination to seek Him in His Word be fruitless, but always a source of light and life. One time it might be one thing, and another, something altogether different.

Today, it is the image of the lakeside boat: His curious little podium.
