Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

January 26 A.D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

2 Timothy 1:1-8
or 1 Timothy 1:1-5
Psalm 96:1-2a, 2b-3, 7-8a, 10
Mark 3:22-30

A reflection on today's Scripture:

No one can enter a strong man's house to plunder his property. . . . (see Mark 3:27)

Satan cannot fight Satan or the whole empire crumbles. It takes a strong person opposed to Satan to enter into the house and tie Him up.

Every day Jesus does this for countless souls in bondage. Satan has taken them and made them his own -- they are the treasures of the prince of this world. But Jesus enters Satan's house and returns these Children of God to their rightful place.

Each time we sin, Satan gets a stronger hold on us. But his hold can never be as strong as the seal Jesus placed on us at our Baptism. In the words of an old song, "We are washed in the blood of the lamb." And there is nothing that can make us more clean, more pure.

Know that when you feel mired in sin, stuck, abandoned, and hopeless, that is exactly how Satan wants you to feel. Why call upon God for help when you know you are beyond it? But is God's reach too short; is His arm too weak to save? Absolutely not. The prince of this world is a strong man only in comparison to us. His house is as weak as a house of straw compared to the might of the Love of God, Jesus Christ.

Remember this -- Satan does not free us from Satan, nor do any of our works. Indeed, Jesus Christ, our Lord, Savior, Friend, and constant Companion daily wages battle to redeem us back from the prince of this world. Daily He defeats Satan and all of the fallen angels to invite us back into the throne-room of God.
