Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

January 23 A.D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Hebrews 8:6-13
Psalm 85:8 and 10, 11-12, 13-14
Mark 3:13-19

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Scripture is rich in the amount of information we can learn from it, and it is awesome that we can hold, read, and reflect on the Word in our own homes! There are however, many details that are left to our imagination.

We hear today in the gospel of St. Mark how Jesus went up to a mountain and called to Him those who would be His apostles. (Mark 3:13-19) It was an intimate experience in that we are told He called each by name and in some instances changed their names.

We can imagine how significant this event was to Christ. Undoubtedly He had prayed about it. We can wonder if He discussed His choices beforehand with anyone, for instance His mother. Christ was carrying out the mission of His Father and He selected personally those who would assist Him.

The same scenario goes on today! At our Baptism we are named, recognized as a member of the Christian community, and later, at Confirmation sent forth to spread the Good News! What an honor to have been chosen and to have accepted, through our godparents! Imagine Christ calling us daily, and at the moment of our death!
