Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 110:1, 2, 3, 4
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Can the Wedding Guests fast while the Bridegroom is with them?
Fasting is a good discipline. If done in the spirit of prayer with the only point being an offering to God of self and a desire to free oneself from all the things that keep us from Him, it is an excellent discipline.
But too often we fast as a divided person. "I'll fast for peace, and besides itís a good way to start my new diet." We have only one eye on the goal, and so, at times it is simply better not to fast. And here Jesus tells us clearly, while the wedding guest is with us, fasting is not required or even a good practice.
As it happens, the Church advises and teaches us on the proper times to fast because, in fact, now, the Bridegroom is always with us. We need to know when it is the proper season because Jesus is our constant companion. We can visit Him in the Eucharistic tabernacle, we can receive Him daily, and we can bring ourselves into His presence by reading the Holy Scriptures. There is no time when we need be away from the Bridegroom. He is the Bridegroom of each soul, and as such, companion, champion, and constant friend.
So, follow the Church regulations regarding the fast, remembering always that obedience is highly cherished by God. But also remember that the Bridegroom is with us, even in the season of the fast -- perhaps especially then. Reach out to Him and feast on His presence.
