Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

January 14 A.D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Hebrews 2:14-18
Psalm 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9
Mark 1:29-39

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Recently, I had a patient who named her newborn daughter Evangeline. I was surprised because it is so unlike the trendy sounding names so common today and also because it is my husband's mother's name.

I never knew her; she died many years before we met and married, yet I owe her an immense debt of gratitude. She raised a wonderful son whose primary values are centered in the love of God and obedience to His Church, values that have permeated our life, bringing us the kind and depth of peace and joy unknown to so many.

When I told my patient this, she shared with me the reason for her infant's name, because it is feminine for "evangelist," or one who spreads the Good News.

Jesus, in the Gospel for today, reminds His apostles that the reason He came was to be an evangelist, to preach the Good News. So too, should it be for us, to preach and teach and remind those we meet about the love of God poured out for us in the Person of His Divine Son, Jesus.

Please join me in a little prayer for baby Evangeline and her parents, that through the goodness of God and His saints (one of them I am sure is my own mother-in-law), that they and we will be heralds of the Good News.
