Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 John 5:14-21
Psalm 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20
A reflection on today's Scripture:
The one . . . who stands and listens for him, rejoices . . . at the bridegroomís voice.
(see John 3:29)
In our first reading St. John declares that Jesus Christ reveals to us the One and only true God. He continues by saying that God always hears and answers the prayers of His faithful and grants those wishes that are in keeping with His perfect will. The latter is necessary; for our prayers, although well-meaning, may not always be to our good or the good of those for whom we pray. Only our omniscient God knows all the circumstances that must be taken into consideration. God, however, does give His prayerful followers discernment, the ability to detect and reject false teachings in order to preserve the integrity of the gospelsí truths and love.
John then makes a puzzling statement: we are to pray for those in sin, but not for those whose sin is deadly. Likely, this refers to Christ who said that there is an unforgivable sin, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit by those who say His good works are being done by the power of the devil rather than God. Apostasy, a willful abandonment of the Faith, an unbending disbelief, severs our ties with God.
In our gospel, some of Johnís followers were disturbed by Jesus also baptizing believers, but John corrected them saying that this is how God meant it to be, that he must decrease while Christ must increase. John joyfully refers to Jesus as the bridegroom, the rightful spouse of the Church, the One who endows her with His very life.
Almighty and eternal God,
we thank you for having given us a new life in the water and the Spirit. May we faithfully share Christís divine love and truths with all others. Amen.
