Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
January 3, A.D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 John 2:29-3:6
Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Now I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God. (John 1:34)
Today's readings direct us to the unique, selfless love God has given us in Christ. It is an infinite, unwavering love; for though many have rejected Him, He still sacrificed His only Son to rescue us from spiritual death. Not only does God sustain us in physical life, He also offers us the ability to participate in His own blessed, righteous, holy life.
Our accepting this is His dearest wish, for it is our only means of establishing a truly just and peaceful world. We who believe in Him, who shine forth His goodness, truth and love, can attract others to follow His way to eternal life.
In our gospel today, John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the perfect, sacrificial "lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." Some mistakenly thought John was their awaited Messiah, but he dispels this idea by describing his seeing God's Holy Spirit descend from the sky and resting upon Jesus in the form of a dove.
John explains to the people that his task was only to make them aware of their sin, their separation from God, and so prepare them to receive Christ's forgiveness and accept being transformed in heart and mind to live in God's righteousness. Christ would then enable those who believe in Him to live in His new life by giving them the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the sanctifying grace of God. When Christ asks us to follow Him, He gives us His Spirit of wisdom and power to do so; our part is simply to obey His Spirit's bidding.
O Glorious Lord,
draw us beyond the limits this world imposes on us
and lead us through Your Spirit
to complete our humanity through a life of holiness.
