Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
December 24, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16
Psalm 89:2-3, 4-5, 27 and 29
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Today many will complete their preparations for Christmas - last minute purchases will be made, gifts will be wrapped, cooking and baking will continue until all is set and ready as it can be.
Those who prepare spiritually, too, will continue with their prayers and works of mercy involving like the other -- effort, time and purposeful commitment.
All said and done, most of us usually find we are never fully prepared on either plane.
If much of our time and energy have been spent on shopping and wrapping, baking and traveling, we are very tired and probably overextended.
If not enough time and effort have been spent in preparing a fitting dwelling place for the infant Lord, we may not only be tired, but feeling rather sad.
Time has run out; yet God, unlike stores and post offices, is never closed, but open to receive even the smallest and last minute gifts of love.
Come Lord Jesus. My weary sinful heart cries out for You.
Come O Lover of my soul. Give me Peace, Hope, Joy.
I give You all that I have, all that is my very own to give.
I give You my heart.
Though very late, it's not too late. Sweep out the stable, position the manger, stand vigilant and prayerfully wait.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace. (see Luke 1:78-80)
