Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

December 22, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Samuel 1:24-28
1 Samuel 2:1, 4-5, 6-7, 8abcd
Luke 1:46-56

A reflection on today's Scripture:

My Soul Proclaims the Greatness of the Lord. . . .

We have all felt what Mary sings here. There are times when our souls simply shout to the skies. Perhaps we are viewing a beautiful landscape or attending a wedding or perhaps we have just witnessed the miracle of birth. Whatever it may be, we are momentarily called out of ourselves and into the land of eternity. Our souls leap up and proclaim God's greatness.

And Mary has the greatest cause of any, for she is chosen to be the vessel of salvation. From her shall come the salvation of humankind and the source of all hope. In her body, new life has taken shape with the "yes" that she uttered to the Angel -- she has consented to it and God fulfills the plan of the ages. Indeed, what else can her soul do than proclaim the greatness of the Lord?

As we wait now, these three short days and long nights in the dark crawl toward Christmas, give yourself a moment to allow your soul to proclaim the greatness of the Lord. Allow yourself just a breath or two to feel His presence and delight in it, knowing that even as we wait -- the waiting has long been over.
