Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

December 4, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Isaiah 26:1-6
Psalm 118:1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27
Matthew 7:21, 24-27

A reflection on today's Scripture:

A central theme of todayís scripture seems obvious:

The Lord is the eternal rock (first reading).
His word is the sure foundation of a life (gospel).

The beginning of Advent invites us to examine the foundation of our lives. We should find our foundation is the Rock, the Word of God. Godís Word provides the surest reason to trust. These are words of love, of guidance and fulfillment. As we experience these fruits of the word, our trust grows, our lives seem to be more firm, and the direction of our lives can be clearer. The Church year gives us the opportunity to dwell on the power and application of the Word of God in our lives. The first week of Advent is the time to begin.

Consider the Virgin Mary who had dwelt upon the Word of God in her life. She was a young woman who had learned to pray the psalms, to repeat the scriptures and to serve the Lord. She was from the families of the poor of the Lord, who were the richest families of faith in Israel. After she had received the Word of God in her womb, her Magnificat echoed Isaiah (first reading) as well as many other texts of the Hebrew Scriptures. God pulls down the exalted, tramples them in the dust, and raises up the poor. Her Magnificat prophesies the work of Jesus who brings mercy to every generation. Trusting in God proves valid!

Like Mary, the Mother of God, we can use these scriptures to inspire us to reflect on what we have seen as the works of God. We will learn what we need for a firm foundation in our lives and how that foundation helps us be witnesses, to be blessed people who come in the name of the Lord (see the responsorial psalm for today).
