Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Revelation 15:1-4
Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 7-8, 9
Luke 21:12-19

A reflection on today's Scripture:

They will seize and persecute you,
they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons,
and they will have you led before kings and governors
because of my name. (see Luke 21:12)

For the Apostles, this warning from the Christ was mortally true as all but one was led to death as a martyr. But even more important to us nearly two-thousand years later, it is still happening. We have many modern martyrs. St. Maximilian Kolbe comes to mind as do the countless religious and lay Catholics who have given their lives worldwide right up to this very day.

Sometimes, other forms of persecution are much more subtle than this in our times. Here in America, the so called “land of the free,” expressions of our Christian beliefs are being prohibited more and more, in fact, at a very alarming rate. Pro-life people in this country and everywhere around the world are being persecuted and jailed for defending the lives of the unborn and the elderly. The list goes on.

As Christians, we have no choice but to expect persecution in its many forms. But what remains important is that we stand up to the authorities of this world. The day will come when everyone, believer and nonbeliever alike, will stand before The Authority of all creation, on that unavoidable day of final judgment.
