Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 11-12, 18-19
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Today's Gospel has always disturbed me.
It speaks of division, not just among nations, but between family members. It is a sober reminder that even those, who presumably were of one heart, may one day be at odds with one another.
Recently, my very dear 89-year-old Uncle traveled long distances to visit the wives and some of the children of his departed brothers (four of them). It was a wonderful visit where we heard some outrageously funny stories. We also heard of the Great War (WWII) where everyone pulled together for a common cause. We heard of unflinching loyalty to basic things and in the secret of our hearts felt the pain of loss (his and ours).
In the space of his life, though he did not say so, I could see how things had changed -- how faith-filled living has been undermined, how strong the family ties, how values have since eroded and how love and service to our country is optional.
Does one nation have to be against another, one countryman against another countryman and even one or more family members against the others? Sadly, until everyone acknowledges the sovereignty of God over His creation, that is the way things will be.
No wonder Jesus longed for the fire of the Holy Spirit, why He longed for it to blaze up!
I too long, O Lord, for everything that keeps us from being a holy people to be burned away; (Luke 12:49) to be everything You longed for us to be!
I too, long, O Lord!
Come Holy Spirit.
Let the fire fall.
