Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
October 21, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 85:9ab-10, 11-12, 13-14
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Blessed are those servants. . . . (see Luke 12:38)
Blessed are those servants whom the Lord finds waiting for Him. How is such waiting shown?
Prayer, constant prayer.
Prayer is one sign of waiting and attending and readiness.
In prayer we plow again and again the field of the heart, all too ready to harden under the burdens of the day, all too ready to become stony and unyielding. Yet prayer is our hope for happiness and our constant delight in the presence of the Lord.
Fasting, purposeful, mindful fasting.
In the turmoil of today's world, it is helpful to have a routine fast, something that sets us apart and reminds us that we are God's people. Not something that maims and destroys or forces endless concentration on food rather than on God.
It can be something very, very small, such as strictly obeying speed limits while traveling in the car, for moving more slowly than we are wont to do on our own, focuses our wayward attention on the small things of life wherein God appears to us.
It can be something like “a fast” from talking about others in either a negative or a positive way, choosing rather, to talk TO others in a loving way.
Almsgiving, giving of our wealth and self.
When we give some of our substance to support those around us, we show in magnificent outline how we love.
When we give of our time to help one in need, we show love.
When we make something for someone or use our abilities to improve their homes, their lives, their spirits, we are preparing the way of the Lord.
When we give some of our money, property, or goods, we are sacrificing in true love and devotion.
When we undertake these three ways of preparation, we will find ourselves ready when the Lord comes to dine with us. Let it be so with everyone who loves Him!
