Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Galatians 1:13-24
Psalm 139:1b-3, 13-14ab, 14c-15
Luke 10:38-42

A reflection on today's Scripture:

There is need of only one thing. . . . (Luke 10:42)

Truth to tell, Mary does seem to be just a wee bit lazy. When Jesus is around, she's sitting at his feet, but when we consider the episode where Jesus comes to raise Lazarus, it is Martha who is there to greet Jesus. So, it's possible that Martha is complaining about a long-term problem in her plea to Jesus. She had just had it up to here and wanted some help.

Note, Jesus says that Mary has chosen the better part in resting with Him and that He has no intention of changing that; however, He doesn't really respond to the complaint, saying instead--Martha, look at yourself, stop looking at others.

You know, a great deal of our unhappiness comes when we are looking at others, comparing what they have to what we have, what they do compared to what we do, what they look like compared to what we look like, what their children do, etc. This is a certain road to misery, whether or not they come off better or worse in the comparison. What's more, it is useless. There is but one thing required, one thing needed--to spend time at the feet of Jesus. That is the only thing that matters. If we do that, all else will be fulfilled.

So whether we have a legitimate complaint against neighbor, sister, or friend, little matters. When we fail in charity, we fail in all that matters. When we set out to compare ourselves against others we will always fail in charity. The solution--prayer, sitting at the feet of Jesus.
