Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

October 2, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Job 19:21-27
Psalm 27:7-8a, 8b-9abc, 13-14
Matthew 18:1-5, 10

A reflection on today's Scripture:

In high school we had a choir director who had us singing some wonderful musical selections. Mr. Gage (that was his name) was quick to inform us that some of the best choral music was sacred music. I think he was right.

One year, four large high school choirs and a combined orchestra from the area schools came together with the city's symphony orchestra and performed Handelís Messiah. Adult members from an adult local choral group sang some of the solo parts, young voices, being as yet unable to imitate the richness of the male bass and baritone parts. It was a moving experience, one I will never forget.

To this day some 45 or so years later, I remember the song about "knowing that my redeemer liveth and that in my own flesh I shall see my God." Those words, along with the stirring music that accompanied them, seemed to set the stage for the kind of hope and longing that continue in me to this day.

Often since then, that phrase "I know that my redeemer liveth" has popped up again in very meaningful ways, such as in the Easter banners I was privileged to make one year for our small country mission church, also as my husband and I were praying the beautiful Office of the Dead by the bedside of his dying father, and now again in this meditation which I have been blessed to write today.

Just seconds before my father-in-law breathed his last breath, he opened his eyes and looked off afar. This, mind you, after having not opened his eyes or being obviously conscious for some time. We know that the brightness and almost peaceful astonishment in his eyes, though death was but an instant away, were a signal grace of the hope that all who believe, share.

Yes, Our Redeemer lives and in our own flesh we shall someday see God!

"O Death, where is your sting?"
