Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
October 1, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Job 9:1-12, 14-16
Psalm 88:10bc-11, 12-13, 14-15
A reflection on today's Scripture:
I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home. (Luke 9:61)
Today's Gospel is a strong reminder how in deciding to follow Jesus, we have to have a single-minded commitment and focus in our discipleship. No ifs or buts.
Our Faith demands that we follow the path less traveled, that we listen to the Holy Spirit who burns in our hearts, that we ensure our thoughts and actions are grounded in the commitment to our Faith; our commitment to our Faith comes first. And rather than reduce the value of the other aspects of our lives, this commitment above all others actually enriches all other life dimensions.
Our Faith in Jesus casts light on every aspect of us and our relationships. It allows us to appreciate what is truly valuable, gives us discernment to pursue things everlasting, enhances our relationship with ourselves and those around us -- but only after our commitment to Jesus has to come first -- and this must be founded in love.
Today is the feast of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, virgin and doctor of the Church -- otherwise known as Thérèse of Lisieux or "the Little Flower." She is recognized probably as one of the greatest saints of modern times. In her search for sanctity, she realized that it was not necessary to accomplish great acts, or great deeds, in order to attain holiness and to express her love of God. She focused on "scattering flowers" for God and these flowers being every little sacrifice, every glance, every word and doing of the least actions for love of God.
Let us today use "the little Flower" as our guide, as we make a commitment to put love at the core of all our actions and deeds. When our actions are grounded in divine love, then we are truly living our Faith.
