Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

September 27, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Ecclesiastes 11:9—12:8
Psalm 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14 and 17
Luke 9:43b-45

A reflection on today's Scripture:

The Dawn of Youth is Fleeting (Ecclesiastes 11:10)

In today's readings, the psalmist ponders time, the brevity of life. Yet he knows that it is significant because he sees us to be under God's guidance and protection. Ecclesiastes' author asserts that God has a plan for humanity, though its purpose remains hidden. We do not know when it is best to act, yet life's events proceed at times deemed best by God. Our lot is to accept life as it comes and to live it to our best ability.

It was Christ who at the proper time revealed and completed God's plan, bringing true hope to humanity. Jesus teaches that we are created to give glory to our heavenly Father. We do this if, like Him, we empty ourselves to receive the Christ-life He desires to impart to us—for God's glory is served when we become living witnesses to His love and so draw others to Him. The course of our lives is God's means of fitting us to enjoy His love and peace in eternity.

Why did Christ tell His disciples to conceal His identity when the Father revealed to Peter that Jesus is the Messiah? His time had not yet come; His mission was incomplete. Only after the New Covenant had been sealed in Christ's blood and He had conquered death so that we might gain new life in Him, would the truth of His identity become self-evident to all who are earnestly seeking God.

O Lord God, through Christ You revealed the ultimate good You planned for Your children. By Your grace may our lives bring You the honor and glory You deserve and prepare us for eternal life with You. Amen.
