Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

September 25, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Ecclesiastes 1:2-11
Psalm 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14 and 17bc
Luke 9:7-9

A reflection on today's Scripture:

All things are vanity.

These words sound like they come from some old curmudgeon who has lost all sense of joy. Instead they are words from Holy Scripture which are meant to help us have the proper perspective toward created things.

Two of several meanings for "vanity" from Webster's dictionary include "valueless" or "a fashionable trifle." We are not to despise created things, but should realize that they're far from the glory of the Creator who made them. In order to make his point, the scripture writer says they are all vanity.

So often, people seem to think that the saints were grim, whereas, quite the opposite was true. Instead, they, unlike most of us, were able to be in the world, while not being of the world. They could interface with the Creator and the created without diminishing either.

Perhaps one of the greatest struggles on our journey toward holiness is to have and to maintain right judgment toward created things. Created things are not worthless, but counted as worthless when compared to God, lest they become stumbling blocks. We are not to despise the beautiful, useful and entertaining things of this earth, but rather, we are to see them for what they are, indicators of an even more glorious and unfathomable God.

Let us pray that we might receive the grace to "number our days aright," have the proper perspective about things and be filled with joy.

The Lord in His kindness has shared with us the treasure of His creative love!
