Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
September 11, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 Corinthians 8:1b-7, 11-13
Psalm 139:1b-3, 13-14ab, 23-24
A reflection on today's Scripture:
I almost can't bear to comment on the "Golden Rule" from today's Gospel. It hits too close to home and reveals how often I have failed to opt for others and instead, indulge my own selfish interests.
How long and what will it take before I can habitually live in imitation of Christ? The prospect is daunting and if it weren't for God's grace, I would just give up altogether.
We are, however, reminded that the Lord is kind and merciful to the wicked as well as the just and therefore we can expect that His grace will continue to be poured out on us even, and as often, as we fail. For our part, we are to accept His grace and never grow so discouraged that we abandon the pursuit of holiness.
Perhaps when we are discouraged by our failings we can use a portion of the good will we are asked to bestow on others and bestow some of it on ourselves—to be a bit as kind and patient with ourselves, as we have been and sometimes so willingly are, toward others.
Be merciful to yourself; your Father is merciful to you.
Stop judging yourself unfairly; you are not judged unfairly by the Lord.
Stop condemning yourself unfairly; you are not condemned unfairly by the Lord.
Forgive yourself; you are forgiven, by the Lord.
