Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
September 8, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Micah 5:1-4a or Romans 8:28-30
Psalm 13:6ab, 6c
Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 or 1:18-23
A reflection on today's Scripture:
We know that all things work for the good of those who love God. . . . (Romans 8:28)
Today we celebrate the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the one whom God chose to bear His Son into this world, Jesus Christ, Who made God's holiness visible to us in human flesh. Though we know little of Mary, we see in her response to the angel, the depth of her love for and trust in God.
Her "yes" fulfilled the prophecy repeated throughout the Old Testament, of a shepherd sent by God to enable His people throughout the world to conquer Satan who is ever tempting man to satisfy his selfishness.
Mary's "yes" also endangered her to being stoned to death if Joseph, to whom she was betrothed, accused her of unfaithfulness. His love remained steadfast as he realized the source of Mary's pregnancy. Though she was spared this dreadful fate, she suffered much along with Christ during His being rejected, abused and killed before her final joy in His resurrection.
In a very real sense those who claim to love Christ should become a Bethlehem for Him, a place where He can be reborn in our human flesh and made visible again to the world through our living in God's love toward our fellow humans. We too may be subject to rejection, ridicule or persecution because of our beliefs and undying faith in Christ. However, His graces will carry us forth and lead us to discover that love is its own reward; for as we live in the joy of His resurrected life, we see in the depth of our hearts that we are fulfilling our reason for "being," sharing His holy life with the world.
O most generous God, may the gift of Your love flow through us without measure that others' hearts may be healed and enabled to live their humanity fully in Christ. Amen.
