Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Corinthians 3:18-23
Psalm 24:1bc-2, 3-4ab, 5-6
Luke 5:1-11

A reflection on today's Scripture:

In today's Gospel we hear the story about Peter who, after being out fishing all night and catching nothing, is told by Jesus, "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch."

It sounds like a simple request, but not only had Peter already been fishing and caught nothing, but we are told he had been fishing all night! Seen in this perspective, it isn't hard to imagine and perhaps even empathize with Peter's rather reluctant acquiescence to the Lord. He had to have been bone-tired!

Like so many others, this Gospel story contains a wonderful lesson and a tremendous source of reassurance.

First, we are reminded that Jesus can help us accomplish what we have already tried and failed to achieve. And, secondly, Jesus doesn't withhold from us His love and affection, even when we are reluctant and unenthusiastic. Instead, as though trusting us more than we trust ourselves, He asks us to humbly submit and cooperate with Him and the grace He provides.

I like to think perhaps in this story, Peter was able to do what Jesus asked, because the Lord gave Him a little nudge, a little knowing smile, a little wink, a helping hand to gather the nets and push out again to deep water—a little grace.

Isn't it so with us? What graces have we received to overcome our failures, our disappointments, our weariness?

"Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets." (Luke 5:5)
