Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
August 30, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 Corinthians 1:26-31
Psalm 33:12-13, 18-19, 20-21
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Of ourselves we are nothing.
All that we are and have is of God's choosing, even that we are Christians.
The first reading points out that God chooses the foolish, weak and lowly "so that no human being might boast before God." (1 Corinthians 1:29) The psalm for the day goes on to say that "Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be His own." (see Psalm 33:12) The reality check comes however with the gospel for today, the parable about the hidden talents.
Have you ever known of a person or persons who joined an organization and were quite ineffective or lazy as a member and yet told everyone about their affiliation with that group as a means of inflating their own ego? We speak of them as "dead wood" in an organization. They just take up space that might be used by a very dynamic member. In churches we might refer to them as "pew warmers" or "Sunday Catholics," persons who fail to live out their responsibilities as Catholic Christians. (In defense of some of these persons, they are ignorant about their beautiful vocation as a Catholic Christian.)
Christ shares with us in the gospel that one day each of us will be judged on how we have used the talents God has given to us. We hear much these days about how the economy is doing. How is each of us doing in investing the talents God has given to us? Are we good stewards?
