Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

August 21, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Ezekiel 36:23-28
Psalm 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19
Matthew 22:1-14

A reflection on today's Scripture:

If I had any common sense I wouldn't write on today's Gospel, but rather on the First Reading or Responsorial Psalm. Unlike the Gospel, they seem to flow nicely toward an understandable and uplifting conclusion.

Instead, the Gospel ends with one of those troubling phrases: "Many are invited, few are chosen."

Certainly it isn't because God goads us to come close to Him and His banquet of Love and then flat-out dismisses us, and worse—only because we didn't show up wearing the right kind of clothing! That's what the Gospel says, but it's a warning, a blessed warning.

The Gospel was meant to trouble us, especially we who, at times, forget that we have a part to play in all of this. Just showing up is not enough!

In His goodness, God calls all of us to share everlasting life with Him, but we must accept the invitation and do what grace provides to be admitted, that is, to be clothed in holiness. It isn't that God is unreasonable or cruel, but that we may fail to do our part.

The binding, the throwing out, the wailing and gnashing of teeth would be our own doing.

Please Lord, don't let it be so for us. May we cooperate with every grace-filled opportunity You give us and come to live with You and the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, One God forever and forever. Amen.
