Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Ezekiel 18:1-10, 13b, 30-32
Psalm 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Once again we have the beautiful Gospel of Matthew depicting the relationship of Christ with children. (Read Matthew 19:13-15.)
People had brought children to Him "so that He could lay His hands on them and pray." When others thought the children should be removed, Christ used an interesting verb . . . namely, "LET the children come to Me, and do not PREVENT them."
It is a question we might ask ourselves today; namely, are we, as a community, PREVENTING children from having a relationship with Christ? We often bemoan the reality that more young people are not coming to Mass. Could it be that because of our actions we have PREVENTED them in some way?
Questions that we might ask ourselves include:
How did I, as a reader of this reflection, come to Christ?
Were my Sunday mornings left free from scheduled activities so that I could go to church?
Did I come to Christ through the example of another?
Was I taught by another how to act in church through instruction and example?
Did I pray in my home?
Were there a Bible and religious pictures and objects in my home?
Are all of these realities happening in homes today?
And for the children, younger or older, do I make them feel welcome in our faith community?
Do I recognize them and call them by name?
Do I give them something to do, so that they have an active role in the worship service?
Christ, according to Matthew, did not say, “Bring the children to Me;” He said, “LET them come, and do not PREVENT them.” It gives us something to ponder.
