Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

August 12, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Ezekiel 2:8—3:4
Psalm 119:14, 24, 72, 103, 111, 131
Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven? (Matthew 14:1)

Small children do not see better, but they do see differently. The way they think about things shapes how they see. They see with a light and a truth that often we have forgotten we even had, much less that we could see with. When they look at Jesus, they see a completely different person than we see.

Jesus tells us that we need to see and be as little children. We must learn trust. It is hard for us because the world is too much with us. We know how people treat us, and we've come to see even kindly gestures as loaded with some kind of meaning and agenda. Children don't see that. Because they don't, if you think about it, they demand from us our best. For a normal person there is little else more painful than a child in distress.

So it is with God and His children. He looks upon us and sees that child—the child who has forgotten who He is and why He's here. He sees us lonely, having only ourselves, and sad. He reaches down and touches us—through Scripture, through the Church, through other people. He tries every way to show us once again who we are.

We need only take His instruction and become born again—return to the knowledge that we are God's precious children, each loved as though each were an only child. Each one loved as God loves His own son. And we can only know it if we return to Him in childlike simplicity, in prayer, and in acts of mercy and love that reflect Him.
