Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Ezekiel 1:2-5, 24-28
Psalm 148:1-2, 11-14
Matthew 17:22-27

A reflection on today's Scripture:

The hand of the Lord came upon me. (see Ezekiel 1:3)

Biblical commentary tells us Ezekiel was unique, being the only prophet called by God when in captivity in Babylon. There he had a vision of God's glory, power and majesty in a huge cloud flashing fire.

Reading all of chapter one, we learn that God remained invisible to Ezekiel but sent him four angels in human shape and faces, though each also had three additional faces: that of a lion excelling man in strength and boldness; an ox excelling in diligent work and patience in God's service; and an eagle excelling in quickness, piercing sight and soaring high to see into divine mysteries.

These angels appeared like a man, for in the fullness of time the Son of God would come as the Son of Man (verse 26) with a nature far excelling that of ordinary men. This vision and that of the dry bones restored to life by God (chapter 37) served to inspire Ezekiel to prophesy the restoration of Israel to a new life as fulfilled by Christ in the New Testament.

Today's Gospel illustrates a small but important part of Israel's salvation history. The temple tax was called "an atonement for the soul," as a sacrifice to be offered for the remission of sin. Christ, though sinless, paid it to fully identify Himself with His people, all born under God's law, and also to support the public worship of God. The fish miraculously containing the coin asserts Christ's divine power and also illustrates the cooperation needed from humans (Peter) in fulfilling God's saving plan.

O Father God,
in Christ You have sent us Your Spirit enabling us to become Your children by adoption. Touch our hearts that we may grow toward Your promised new life.
