Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Today, we again have three selections from Holy Scripture that are so moving that it is hard to focus on the serious considerations they demand. A common thread, however, is the necessity of humility as a prerequisite for spiritual growth.
In the First Reading, we hear that God has gifted us by placing His law within our hearts; it is so close that we barely have to search for it. If that is so, why then does God sometimes seem so absent?
The answer is not that God is absent, but that we have erected self-serving barriers that separate us from Him. Often, we are so full of our own supposed importance that there is little authentic self-knowledge about how absolutely dependent we are on God and the gifts He has granted us.
If we are serious and think about it, we probably can recognize that the times when we have begun to go awry are the times when we thought our ways were superior to God’s way—the times we disobeyed our parents and other legitimate sources of God’s authority, the times we failed to acknowledge our wrongdoing and to change our course, the times we have not availed ourselves of God’s ever-present and overflowing mercy.
Let us not continue following in any faulty paths, but instead, get ourselves straightened out—quickly and surely! All it takes is accepting what is true—what God is and we are not.
"'But who do you say that I am?'
Simon Peter said in reply,
"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'" (See: Matthew 16:15-16)
