Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 29, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Jeremiah 14:17-22
Psalm 79:8, 9, 11 and 13
John 11:19-27

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I am the resurrection and the life. . . .

Today we celebrate Martha, and the gospel readings give us a choice of stories—Martha complaining about Mary, or Martha asking Jesus for the greatest of all favors. And in asking, she receives, just as Jesus promised in the Sermon on the Mount. But she gets a lot more than she bargained for. In addition to getting Lazarus, her beloved brother back, she becomes witness and auditor of one of the great Truths of the life of Jesus.

"I am the resurrection and the life. . . ." Jesus is the end and the beginning of our spiritual lives. In baptism we "die" to rise again from the waters reborn into the life of Christ. This is the great truth that Martha received. But the story has more to it than that. Every question we ask, every request we make, is answered. But in receiving the answer, we also should be looking for the truth behind it. Jesus speaks to us in the everyday. He has something to say to each of us each moment we are willing to turn to Him and open up to Him.

Our simple requests are answered by an infinite God, Who, in answering, reveals once again the dazzling face of love behind all that He does. If we look, we will see it. If we seek to understand, He will clarify for us. He, indeed is our resurrection and our life, giving deeper meaning to every moment—if we allow Him to do so.
