Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 28, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Jeremiah 13:1-11
Deuteronomy 32:18-21
Matthew 13:31-35

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I will announce what has been hidden from the foundation of the world. (see Matthew 13:35)

Today's readings begin on a somber note as Jeremiah is graphically shown by God the penalty Judah will pay for its infidelity to Him. Because of their prideful allegiance to a false God, they will suffer a spiritual rot equal to the total decay of the cloth Jeremiah was told to bury and later unearth.

This great loss is emphasized in Deuteronomy which tells His people He will hide His face from them as they have hidden their faces from Him. Having separated themselves from God's grace, they will become vulnerable to attack and defeat by their enemies.

Hope for mankind is regained with the coming of Christ Who put sin and evil to death in His own human flesh. Through our faith in Him and obedience to His teachings, we will share in His conquest of all that disturbs our peace.

Jesus uses two parables to show that although many will reject God's peace and His gift of citizenship in His kingdom, the work of His Spirit will continue to draw people to Him.

God's kingdom will continue to grow to great size as does the tiny mustard seed impelled by God's living power of love to become a large bush providing shelter and a home for many.

Likewise a speck of yeast (God's leaven, His Word) when placed in three measures of flour will create bread enough to feed 100 people. God's power will continue to work in hidden, mysterious ways to spiritually feed and comfort all willing to hear and receive Him, His living Word.

O God, loving provider and protector, open our eyes to the wonder of creation and the beauty of human life so we may cherish the gifts and the people surrounding us. Amen.
