Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Isaiah 10:5-7, 13b-16
Psalm 94:5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 14-15
Matthew 11:25-27

A reflection on today's Scripture:

For although you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, you have revealed them to the childlike. (Matthew 11:25)

A distinct silence can be felt in the moments just before our 6:00 a.m. weekday mass, partly because the usual bustle is missing from the church at daybreak, and partly because some of us are still drowsy from sleep.

This particular morning, the stillness resonated past 6:00. As a rule, our church runs like a well-oiled machine, so when the chimes marking the start of mass didn't sound, I became concerned. A parishioner with the same thought left his pew to investigate.

In the meantime, the tranquility continued. Remarkably, no one turned around to see why mass was delayed; they were absorbed in the presence of Jesus in the tabernacle, fully trusting that their chance to worship would come. Through the childlike trust of these people, my perception of the scene changed, and suddenly, I no longer viewed it as us waiting, but as Jesus waiting. He revealed to me that in these moments of my life when the unexpected happens, it's never He who becomes distracted and pulls away, only me. He waits long-sufferingly for us to worship Him, whether it's in His House or within our hearts.

In a short time, our Pastor appeared and everything returned to normal. But I learned that Jesus would have waited forever, and the spirit of the mass would have gone on in the hearts of those present, regardless of the circumstances around them.
